Earlier this year, Chip Albright started a music series called Third Thursdays at the Unity Center of Des Moines. Every third Thursday of the month, as the name suggests, he plays an hour long set from 6-7pm, often bringing someone along for shared storytelling and a generally good time. Last week, I was that guest.

Me playing one of my originals
Chip in a chipper mood. May have been the delicious chocolate chip cookies he brought along for patrons to enjoy.

A week or so earlier, Chip had written a song about Iowa gubernatorial candidate, Josh Turek, an all-around good dude and a glimmer of hope for the people of Iowa. Of course we started the set with it.

Set List

If It’s Turek, It’s Terrific
The Morel Song
Up On Chorito Ridge
Bluebird (Me solo)
Walk (Me solo)
SmartyPhone
Adult World
Magic
Go to Sleep (Me solo, cover of a $trick classic)
Tear This Building Down (Me solo)
Big Ol’ Moon
An 80s Revue

I played three of my originals, Bluebird, Walk and Tear This Building Down, as well as a cover of Go to Sleep by world famous MC and local $trick9, who also was in the audience. To everyone’s relief, I pulled off my songs without a hitch and Chip and I jumped back into another older original, Big Ol’ Moon to round out the set.

Catch the next Third Thursday as Chip welcomes 3X Iowa Hall of Famer Dartanyan Brown.
